Soft and Fluffy Classic Dinner Rolls: The Ultimate Comfort Food

Soft and Fluffy Classic Dinner Rolls: The Ultimate Comfort Food

I’ll admit it—getting dinner rolls just right became my personal mission last Thanksgiving. I wanted those perfectly soft, golden rolls that make everyone reach for seconds (or thirds). After testing and tweaking several batches, I finally landed on this recipe, and let me tell you—it’s worth every effort. These rolls stole the show at dinner, and I couldn’t have been happier seeing them disappear from the breadbasket in no time.

Along the way, I discovered a couple of tricks to make them even better. First, roll the dough on the smaller side and place the rolls close together in the pan. As they bake, they’ll expand and touch, creating that satisfying “pull-apart” effect and keeping them extra tender. And for the perfect crust, bake them in a 9x13 metal cake pan, which ensures even heat and that beautiful golden finish.

Classic Dinner Rolls Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar (or honey)
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted (for brushing)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let it sit for about 5–10 minutes, until frothy. This ensures your yeast is active and ready to work its magic.

  2. Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture, remaining sugar, egg, melted butter, salt, and 2 cups of flour. Mix until combined, then gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms. You can hand mix, or use my favorite tool, the stand mixer.

  3. Knead and Rise: Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Or use the stand mixer on medium-low for 6 minutes. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  4. Shape the Rolls: Punch down the dough and divide it into 15–18 small, even pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth ball and place them close together in a greased 9x13 metal cake pan. Cover and let rise for another 30–45 minutes, until puffed and touching.

  5. Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F. Bake the rolls for 18–22 minutes, until golden brown on top.

  6. Finish with Butter: As soon as the rolls come out of the oven, brush them with melted butter for that irresistible glossy finish.

Pro Tips for Perfect Dinner Rolls

  • Roll Small: Slightly smaller rolls give you a better rise, a more even bake, and that satisfying pull-apart effect.
  • Pack Them Close: Placing the rolls close together helps them stay soft and moist while baking.
  • Use a Metal Pan: A 9x13 metal cake pan ensures even baking and a perfectly golden crust.

These rolls are perfect fresh out of the oven but just as delicious the next day. Store any leftovers in ModKitchn’s reusable bread bags to keep them soft and fresh! Whether you’re serving them with butter, jam, or alongside your favorite dishes, these dinner rolls are guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser.

Happy baking, and enjoy every fluffy bite!
